Unhappy Highpoint RocketRaid 454 and SUSE 10

I have a working SUSE10 installation on a machine with a single ide hard disk.

I am trying to install a driver for the above card. I have followed the instructions from Highpoint but the driver fails to load successfully. If i remove the card the system boots, with it in, It hangs saying the following:-

hde: DMA timeout retry
hde: timeout waiting for DMA
hde: lost interupt
....
It then just loops repeating the last line every few seconds.

As I can't get at the system when the boot fails I can give you any info from the boot log but below is the top part of the boot.msg file when the card is not plugged in..I have also included the modprobe.conf.local file.

Any help on how to identify the problem and fix it would be appreciated.
