hiccup: dirs off root showed up as files

after no reboot in ~ 4wks all dirs off root in both storage drives(both are 60GB WD 5400rpm, ~6months old) showed up as files in both samba shares and directly from the machine. the system drive was normal. luckily only a reboot was necessary to fix. question: never had any problems before, and tweaked with hdparm about a month ago with typical settings as follows:

hdparm -c3 -X34 -d1 -u1 -m16 -S241 -p4 /dev/hdf
hdparm -c3 -X34 -d1 -u1 -m16 -S241 -p4 /dev/hdg

any ideas if hdparm, or something else, needs some scrutiny? This machine is a P233 that has always been solid; i'm wondering if the server data is ready to take a vacation without me...

thx, - bp
