Sounds like a rodent problem doesn't it. I was going fine until I temporarily hooked up a cheap Logitech cordless mouse/keyboard. Mouse was then jumpy and at times unresponsive. Switched back to my other ones (Dell Keyboard and MS Mouse), still had it. Tried going back a kernel version then upgrading. No joy. Reinstalled mint. Still there!
Dell Precision T5500, two Intel Xeon processors, 36 GB Ram, kernel is 4.10.0-33-generic.
I've tried threads here and some other places as well to no avail.
So as soon as I wrote that I reread it and thought hey - I eliminated the software by reinstalling, and the internal hardware by using different USB ports (on a card and on the machine proper), that left the mouse itself. Since this started when I tried a different mouse, I got sidetracked. 35 years of computing and I should know to try the mouse first. So I switched to a different mouse (of same model) and no problem since. I'll mark solved in a couple of days if no further problems.
