(here's a challenge) VGA text console modes with a new kernel.
Im running on slack 9.1, and have upgraded the kernel from the default 2.4.22 to a 'straight from source -install and compile- 2.6.2) For the most part everything works, except excpet the vga text consoles. Before slackware allowed me to run at 1024x768, it was nice. Now I can seem to get it to work in my new kernel. I found the option(s) (I think) in the kernel confiuartion process, and have got it set up in lilo (id imagine) but I cant get it to work, the system boots up and runs on a black screen until it booats into X.
First off, do I need to enable any frambuffer device drivers in the kernel config? second, im running on a geforce mx 400 graphics card, Please any slack experts would help. you thank. |
same problem with debian
i enabled framebuffer support and vesa device but it wont help either.

I don't know if Slack 9.1 does the same thing as SuSE but you could try it if all else fails. I had a similar problem with a black screen until X loaded when I booted with ex. vga=791. I found out that SuSE uses a special Splash screen which would not work with self compiled kernels. So the kernel could not find that splash screen and everything was black. The solution is to add the line append="splash=0" to the image entry in lilo.conf. For me it disables SuSE's splash screen and gives me a nice 1024x768 console. If you already have an append line, just add splash=0 between the quotation marks like this: append="hdc=ide-scsi splash=0". Good luck! |
