help with XFree86 on docked dell laptop using Sony S91 Monitor

I saw an earlier post regarding this monitor where someone was having problems centering the screen.

I, on the other hand, am finding that xfree launches, but nothing is ever displayed on the screen. I've looked up the hsync and vsync rates for the monitor and have even experimented with the modes, i..e the monitor documentation said that 1280x1024 was the recommended resolution, so I changed the modes list to start with that resolution (and deleted the higher resolution modes (i.e. 1600x1200 was removed from the line)).

Note, I'm using rh9, which I believe uses xfree86-4. I've noticed that the modelines in the XFree86Config file only state the resolution and none of the other info which used to follow the modelines in the config files for xfree86-3.
Is this info set somewhere else?

however, it still fails to display on the screen. I'm using rh9 and not even redhat's config xfree tool will display on the monitor screen.

is it possible that this behavior is related to the monitor being connected to the laptop's docking station?

any help would be *greatly* appreciated,
