Help with tape drive
Hi, any help with a new tape drive would be very much appreciated! The drive in question is a Quantum Travan 20/40GB drive, I'm running FC3.
Basically all seems fine with the drive being recognised, if I do a 'mt -f /dev/st0 status' i get all the normal stuff i think i should get:
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 512 bytes. Density code 0x48 (Quantum SDLT220).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
Now, the problem comes when I try to write to it. I've already been backup up to an external HDD, so I've already got my 'tar' file (which is about 10GB) ready to go.
I've tried both 'cp backup.tgz /dev/st0', and 'dd if=backup.tgz of=/dev/st0', both of which I guess should do the same thing, but both of which result in the tape drive seeming to record a bit, rewind, record a bit more, and which never seems to end. I let it run doing this for the last 12 hours trying to copy my backup onto tape, and its still going! (or it was until I ctrl-C'd it). Surely this cannot be right?
Many thanks in advance for any help!
