Help with Sound Card

I am using Red Hat Linux Enterprise Edition3 update 2. My built in
sound card is: 82801EB/ER(ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio controller(Built in ASUS P5PE-VM motherbord). Now this sound card detection is done by Linux....But when I press "play test sound" I hear nothing. In windows however the sound card detection says: ADI AD1888JCPZ High Definition Audio 6-channel CODEC (and I have very nice sound quality).

In linux I also see the message: Sound server fatal error.

what am I to do?

Maybe you should try another sound server. There are some. If you tried ALSA, try aRts, or OSS. aRts is really good. Did you check the sound level settings?

ALSA is a great sound server and is usually very good at identifying sound devices.

First, URPMI alsaconf, alsamixer and alsautil.

Then from a console window as (root) run alsaconf. In the beginning, chose the default selections that ALSA offers.

Run alsamixer from the console window and make sure you un-mute all devices, set volume levels to high on all devices.

Run alsactl store from the console to save all the changes.

Go to your Sound GUI(s) on your desktop and make sure all devices are un-muted, and the volume is turned up high. When posed with what sound server to use, chose "ALSA"

Now try all your internal notification sounds from your inboard or outboard speakers, try a CD/DVD in your player. Experiment with which devices need the sound levels adjusted by running alsamixer and adjusting the various sound levels. It should work. Scott
