Help with 500GB USB drive on Fedora Core 3 & 4
Is there anyone out there that could tell me what the heck is going on. I recently purchased 3 WD 500GB USB drives for backup. When I plugged the drive in to my Fedora Core 3 or 4 machine I get the following errors:

Does the firewire connection work?
|
This is a usb device. Yes. both usb ports and HD work.
|
Does this device work on another computer or a different operating system? It sounds like the disc isn't in great shape. If you can get it to work in Windows, go to Western Digital's website and get their diagnostic utility or some other utility, and scan for bad sectors and what not.
|
Yes, I can get it to work on Windows. It's not the hardware. Because, this is a brand new drive(s). I just brought 3 of them at the same time. They all worked fine on Windows and failed on Fedora Core 3.
|
What r the drives formatted?
(fdisk /dev/sdb) |
I have tried it with the default fat file system and ntfs. They both failed. I like to partition it with ext3 filesystem. But, I can't even get that far. It stopped after Fedora detected a drive have plugged into the machine.

Hi,
Is there any news on that topic? I meet the same issue on Mandriva 2006 (with Linux kernel 2.6.12-12): my Western Digital "MyBook" 500GB does not want to be mounted properly. Among many tries, this one seems to be interesting: an "lsusb" returns the hard disk during several seconds, then is being blocked during a couple of minutes (ctrl-c does not stop it) and finally works again but does not return my extern storage... For information, I tried to mount it with Kaella 2.1 (which is a CD bootable Linux distribution with a 2.6.12 kernel if I remember correctly) and I have the same symptomes (especially this lsusb behavior)! Of course my disk does work with Window$ XP; I have created a (single) 500MB FAT32 partition on which I have stored many things. With Mandriva, I can see during a couple of minutes /dev/sdd and /dev/sdd1, but can not mount it. I am afraid the problem is due to Linux, unable to handle WD external device; I hope I am wrong, at least you can show me my mistake ;) ;) Thanks for any information! MyBook not recongized in Linux
I have the same problem. I have an external hdd MyBook 400GB and it is not recognized under Linux (FC4).
It works perfect in Windows on the same USB port. I even use a self-powered USB hub to connect with. It still does not help. Hi,
Just for your information, I have asked Western Digital support and also Mandriva support to get help from them (about one month ago). No answer from Mandriva yet, but WD has responded. And basically they said they do not support Unix :D Their answer was mostly showing that they don't care us (us=free world people) |
this is so sad. it's completely outrageous!
|
Any news on this ? I have the same problem on Debian Sarge (testing) with a WD MyBook 500GB..
Works fine on my Mac and XP computers.. |
I am sorry KrL, I have given up it: on my side, I use my disk only with Windows... until somebody helps us! ;)
Hope this thread can help! Cheers |
Seeing the same issue here. Bran new WD 500gb external hard drive. Works great/fine on Windows, but will not work with the following: uname -a Linux xyzabc123.org 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3 #1 Fri Oct 21 03:46:55 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux |
Sorry for the late replied. I end up upgrading my servers to Fedora 5 which resolved the problem. I have requested tech support from Western Digital and they told me they don't support Linux.
|
Cojo,
Do you have any idea of what can be the reason why on FC3 or 4 it does not work and on Fedora 5 it has been fixed? If you find or know the difference, we may reuse the patch, driver, pack or whatever on other linux distribs to get it work without needing to format our disks for Fedora only because of WD ;) Thanks! |
Jeremie,
sorry for the late reply. The new kernel on FC5 fixed this problem. So, you can either compile a new kernel for FC3 or FC4. You can also upgrade it to FC5. My suggestion is backup all your data and config files and install FC5 rather than upgrade to FC5. I did an upgrade and it took me twice as long than fresh install. John |
