help! Several problems for a linux n00b...
 

Ok, I'm a total linux n00b. I admit it. I've just recently installed Redhat 8.0 on a dual boot with Windows ME (ick, I know. Gimme XP any day!). Everything so far has installed fine, I've got X, Gnome, and KDE installed, plus a plethora of other programs/tools. I have a few problems though -- and I honestly wouldn't ask here if I hadn't been driven insane by my recent googling attempts. :cry:

First, I can't seem to install my ethernet card. It's an Accton EN1207D PCI Fast Ethernet card. Unfortunately, the network wizard doesn't seem to have any accton products in the list of drivers.

So... where can I get drivers for the accton, and, more importantly, how do I install them? I've managed to download a zip file (windows) with a ton of accton drivers in it, but none seem to be linux specifically. I suppose I could fool around with the files, if I only knew how to install them.

Part two is sort of related... those drivers would be stored on my windows partition. How can I mount my windows drive? Is there a way to always mount it and specify where it's mounted?

Finally (for now), a basic question. I need mouse pointer acceleration! It really sucks having to lift my mouse 5 times to move the pointer across the screen. I've been through tons of control panels while logged in to both gnome and kde and can't seem to find any way to speed up my pointer. What gives? How do I take care of this very basic GUI function?

Oh, I should mention that I prefer to use GUI controls to make my changes, but can muck around with a CLI if necessary. Thanks. :)

Well I'm not sure about your nic card but I do have a solution for the mouse issue. Unfortunatly I don't know how to do it in a GUI environment. The command you are looking for is xset with the 'm' switch. You would use it like this:

xset m 5 10

The first number represents the cursor acceleration and the second number represents the distance the mouse is moved. Just mess around with the numbers until you find a setting you like.

Thanks for the reply. It turns out that I solved my net card issue, and if anyone wants to add it to a FAQ anywhere, here's the very basic solution:

the Accton EN1207D Fast Ethernet card uses the RealTek 8139 chipset. Just use the RealTek 8139 driver in the driver list. Bingo, did the trick. In fact, I'm now posting *from* Redhat/Mozilla, rather than windows.

You can do the mouse thing with a GUI, at least under gnome.

Go Applications -> Preferences -> Mouse, click on the 'Motion' tab at the top and there you are.

I think you can mount he windows partition from within Gnome, by right-clicking on a blank area of the desktop and going into the 'disks' entry on the menu. Choose the windows partition, and up it pops on your desktop.
