I need serious help on how to set up my midi device in linux. When I go to the control center --> Sound system --> Hardware, the drop down box for midi device is empty.

Here is the screenshot:

Can someone give me a clean step by step on how to set this up properly?

Need to activate midi input device in kernel

I have the same problem and I think that we have to activate the midi input device in the kernel and recompile it, if you want to use an external midi instrument (like a midi synthesizer). Who is the volunteer to try?

If you just wynt to play midi files you can either use the sound fonts of your sound card or install TiMidity and timidity-instruments.

Eh!! I don't think I want to recompile my kernel... I guess all I want to do is play midi files.
I just have a integrated soundcard in my box, nothin special, so I can't really get the sound fonts... or I don't think I can.. I'm not really sure what I'm talkin about, sadly...

I'm runnin winders right now so I can't really explain what I want to say right now but...
I did install Timidity, but I can't find out how to use it with gui... and when I tried to play a midi file in the terminal it said somethin like not a valid file, check timidityconfig or something like that...
Sorry I don't know exactly what it says... Too lazy to check right now
