I need to buy a new video card and I have a Soltek SL-NV400-L64 nVIDIA nFORCE2 motherboard. I researched that the ATI 9600 card is a better bang than the nVidia FX-5600 card. But what about Linux support? Am I better to buy the nVidia card because of driver maturity?
I run a Radeon 9700 with RedHat 9 and since ATI's last linux driver update I haven't had any problems with 3D acceleration. Tuxracer runs around 70fps... Go for the ATI I'd say...
Do not buy the Nvidia, they have serious programing issues once you get into the heart and soul of them. I need a new Graphics card as well and am getting a 8500 from a friend for only 80.00! HEHE, cant find em that cheap on the web, As for linux compatibility... I doubt there will be any problems whatsoever...
i use an nvidia geforce2 card on my RH9 system and it works like a champ. the nvidia drive install was flawless and very simple if you follow directions and do it right. it really wasnt hard at all. if you need help with it, come back here and i'll give you directions.
as for whether to get an ATI or nVidia, that would be a personal choice. i like nVidia but ATI makes awesome cards. i love my geforce2 even though it is old. i will probably get another one soon.
Distribution: Debian on one machine and Slacky on another.

From reading this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5&pagenumber=1
it sure seems easier than with the via400kt chipset. I don't have any personal experience with it (not yet since my newly bought PC based on nforce2+ATI-RAD-9600PRO still hasn't arrived), but I think the bottom line is that it works well as long as you are willing to spend some time on it.
That was a good read runen. I had problems with nvidia's nvnet drivers already. They would grind my system to a crawl when downloading. I've since put in a D-Link card and it's not an issue anymore.
I going to wait until the ASUS Radeon 9600XT card becomes available and I will most likely buy that.
