HELP please! Problem with AC97 C-Media Audio driver installation on Ubuntu
Hi. I'm a new linux user, I've just installed Ubuntu 5.10. When I finished installation the sound card was working properly. Now I've mounted an NTFS partition, got some audio codecs, that's all I've done, but the sound has disappeared. Please help me. I have AC97 C-Media Audio Onboard Sound. How can I make linux see that device and make it work properly. Thanks a lot.

Have you looked at your mixer, there is a chance that it was muted. Second, try unmounting your NTFS partition, linux doesn't support them very well yet. Third open a terminal and type: "lsmod" and look for something with sound, i e " soundcore , snd-*** etc..."
You should also try to give us more information. The more we understand about your problem the easier and quicker the solution.
Finally, have you tried opening up "xchat" go into the Ubuntu servers and try there. They have more experience with Ubuntu than me. I only used it for about a week.

Did you try those suggestions I made? Did they do anything? I don't use that type of sound card. I use an OPL3-Sa2. So I can't help with the specifics. I HAVE been on here a LOT for sound card help. So I could tell you what I have been told. -I would go and use x-chat to go onto the Ubuntu forums. They helped me to get an unsupported sound card to work. I know your card is supported but I am not sure about integrated cards.
-Why were you copying alsa files to /usr/src. In ubuntu you need alot of other programs to compile an alsa-driver. Headers, kpkg etc. If your card worked initially, then you have the drivers.
--If you have a default Ubuntu installation. Then you are using GNOME as a desktop. Up by the clock is the volume control. Open that up and check your settings; if you get an error, then the card is not being detected.

The first thing I did was tryin' to unmute the sound. But it gave me an error. so as you said the card is not being detected. I have a default ubuntu installation and the GNOME desktop, and the sound was working properly. now it doesn't. what should I do?

I found this on http://www.ubuntuforums.org . There are more but this one should help, they are fairly new.
Breezy on Acer Laptop no sound!
Hope this helps. If not you can search the forums or xchat it. It is normally faster than a message board and more people can see you question instantly...
