HELP!!!! lost ability to boot Debian

PLEASE>>>>>>>>>>>>>HELP!!!!!!!!!
I have posted here before about my lack of ability to copy my Debian 3.0/partial Sarge system on to a larger hard drive and get it to boot. I've tried using the dd method, tried using System Commander and was starting to muck about wiyh partimage, BUT the reason I need to get off the old drive is becoming more pronounced-------- it is dying!
After a normal shutdown to boot in order to avoid being zapped from thunder storms I now get:
loading grub, please wait:
error15
So then I dig out the Official Debian 3.0r1 Boot:Bd2.4 (install CD5) use the rescue root=/dev/hda1 then one gets a partial bootup to:
Warning: unable to open initial console
Kernel panic: No init found,
Try passing init= option to kernel
OKAY we try rescue root=/dev/hda1 init=single:
Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:03 (or sometimes "on 01:01).
All other options from this Debian CD will attempt to setup an installation which will overwrite the one I have and NEED to keep (MUCH eng. software and many difficult CAD drawings in there). ANY HOPE? tia, Interceptor

If you have access to a burner and the connection to download the image you could try knoppix and boot from the cd and copy your files to your spare HD.
Otherwise you could install to your larger HD and boot from it and mount the old drive and copy your information that way.

Well-----------I could do the new install thing on to the new drive then set attach the old drive as "slave", do a bit of /etc/fstab(ing) and make some mount points then copy the missing grub stage2 file to the /boot/grub dir. and it should work correctly. OR, I suppose one might do exactly the same with this RH7.2 system (attach the Debian hard drive as "slave" and copy the grub stage2 off this system). I'm thinking that one should use dd to do the file copy, yes? tia,Matt (Interceptor)
