Help installing OS on new Server!
Has anyone got experience installing a Linux/Unix OS on an Acer Altos G320 Server with SATA RAID?
I am having problems getting Linux (ANY flavour) to detect and properly utilize the onboard software RAID Controller (Intel MatrixRAID).
This server is going to be used in a critical enviroment and needs to operate at the fastest speed possible (high-load database server = need for quick disk access), so I'm trying to set it up using a RAID 0 configuration.
Can anyone help me on this one? When I install Linux or FreeBSD, it won't boot up. It just hangs at the Boot Loader.
Any help would be much appreciated!

I have tried with FreeBSD 5.4, 6.0 and 6.1. I have also tried with CentOS 4.0, 4.1 and 4.3(because there is Acer drivers for RHEL 4.0 Update 1). I have tried with Ubuntu 6.06 Alternative (server edition) as well.

Try with Slackware and use the sata.s kernel. That may help.

When you say "and use the sata.s kernel", how do I do that? Or is it a choice I get asked on the installation CD?

When you come to the first screen after booting Slackware you will have a choice of just pressing enter or pressing F3. If you press F3 it will give you a list of different kernels to install. The one that may be of help to your situation will be the sata.s kernel. just type in sata.s and hit enter and it will use that one. You may want to take the time and read through the other kernels though.

Thanks a LOT, I'll give that a go as soon as I download Slackware.
I'll tell you how it goes.

Nope, that didn't work either.
I have just decided to install CentOS 4.3 and use the OS's software RAID, which seems to work well (will only be really tested when put into critical environment).
Thanks to everyone for their help! (especially jstephens84)
