help dvd-rw goes on vacation

hi im new moving to linux and i honestly thought that i would try it out then gradually make the transition over from windows.... its been only a week and i already decided to use linux as my primary os.... anyways... my dvd-rw has a mind of its own and linux doesn't detect it sometimes... yast shows no sign of it.... dmesg grep hd shows no sign of it... it's as if my dvd-rw left saying "yo. peace out. cya"... windows is still installed and has no problem working with the dvd-rw drive... however... i have managed to find out a way to get linux to detect the drive... if i leave the linux install dvd inside the drive and have it boot off of that then boot off the hard drive then it works 100%. weird. anybody have any clues as to why it's doing this? thanks.

my setup.
Suse Linux 9.2
SATA HardDrive
DVD-RW Secondary Master
DVD-ROM Secondary Slave ((this works 100% all the time even when the master is missing))
