Help configuring monitor on Debian 3.1

Hello I am new to Debian 3.1 and with installing monitors on Linux in general (Red Hat would do it quite easily). Anyways here are some of the specifications about my system.

Linux Distr.
Debian 3.1

PC
HP Pavilion 7920

Monitor
NEC Multisync LCD 1810 Xtraview

So basically I am able to view the monitor but its only at a resolution of 800 x 600 with minimal color support. Any help would be really helpful. Thank you!

I am having the same problem. I just want 1024x768, which I should be able to do easily.

Debian 3.1 testing, xfree86, not x11, I think.

Video card:
NVidia MX 4000+ 128mb (properly insalled, I'm fairly sure).

Monitor:
Envision 470 19".

I used to get 1024x768 by default, then it fell back to 600x800,

Since our problems are so similar, I though I'd "piggyback" on the same thread, hope you don't mind.

At least now I have it displaying somewhat correctly. According to the documentation on my monitor, it should reach 1280x1024 but I am only reaching a maximum of 800x600. Another problem I am having is once I mess with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, and I reboot, GNOME completely doesn't start. Any ideas?
