Headphones won't play any sound

Hi. I am running Ubuntu on my laptop, and I wanted to listen to something with headphones. I plugged my headphones into the headphone jack, but the sound will only play out of the speakers. It works with Windows, but won't seem to work with Ubuntu. I've tried alsamixer, but can't seem to get that to work. It only shows 2 columns: Master and PCM. Thanks in advance.

You may have to adjust Pulseaudio in Settings->Sound Preferences->Output

That didn't work. I plugged my headphones in and it still only showed my speakers as the only output choice.

In pulseaudio there should be a drop box with various devices and one of these has the settings for the headphones and then in the output there should be a volume meter and set. These settings can be confusing.

This is more of a software issue than hardware and think that this should be moved to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/

Got headphones to work with Linux Mint 11. They ended up working right away. Here's a link to some suggestions to anyone else having headphone problems: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ged-in-886972/
