hdparm -S 20 setup

Hi Gurus,

I setup the standby time of my hard disk with:
#>hdparm -S 20
Should I add it is some startup script so that it is read/executed everytime system is booted? Or giving the value once will make the hard disk remember the value?

I am using SuSE 9.3. Or is there any configuration file for setting up this in SuSE?

Many thanks,
S

The BIOS will reset the value to the default, whatever that is, every time you boot.

Put your command in /etc/init.d/boot.local and it will be executed on every boot.

You should not be putting hard drives in sleep mode. If you do, the hard drives life span decreases. Its better to leave them on fully or just turn off the computer at the end of the day.

Sorry I meant to say "Standby mode" not sleep.

BTW I found the place in SuSE for setting up the standby:

/etc/sysconfig/ide:
DEVICES_FORCE_IDE_DMA="/dev/hda:udma5:-S10"

I am using laptop-mode tools. To spin it down on battery usage. I read in the authors page http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7539
http://www.xs4all.nl/~bsamwel/laptop_mode/index.html

it will help in increasing life of hard disk. Or am I missing something... What do you think?

Many thanks,
