Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

HDMI sound problem with Debian

After trawling through several forums and How-to sites I still haven't been able to sort my no-sound problem out of my laptop (Aspire 5336, running Squeeze)) connected to a Samsung TV via an HDMI cable.

aplay -l gives me:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC272X Analog [ALC272X Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 3: INTEL HDMI 0 [INTEL HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I have also checked out the alsamixer to see if anything there may be muted. Or perhaps the wrong sound card selected. I don't think I've got that wrong!

Annoyingly if I boot up in Windows everything works fine without any tweaks or setting changes. However, as I prefer to use my Debian for all my tasks it would be very very nice to get it to work.
I'm fairly new to Linux so suggestions that include line after line of command line changes will make me a little shaky!

I've come across pulseaudio, alsa, pavucontrol during my 'travels' but I'm not sure of their relationships. Do I need all of them to get things working? Or are they just three different sound controllers doing the same thing?

Cheers!

Hello,

There is a fundamental difference in the way sound is played back through HDMI; e.g. it does *not* go through the sound card. Counter intuitively, if you can select sound playback through HDMI, either with an explicit option or by temporarily *disabling* the sound card (or both), you should get HDMI sound.

Regards.
