HDMI output with ATI

Hello, I am on Opensuse 11.3 and am trying to get HDMI output on my Sanyo 36' HDTV with an ATI Mobility Radeon 4250 using the latest opensource Radeonhd driver. I have tested all the resolutions, set the refresh to Auto and set the tv to clone state, I reboot and Grub loads, and an image is now present on my television, but when I boot into my kernel the signal is lost. I have searched endlessly on the issue and can't find any sort of a solution (apparently I'm the only linux user that has experienced this, all's that comes up is Windows forums telling me to wipe and reload) Any ideas on where to start would be much appreciated. Thanks

I haven't tried this yet (I don't have a Hi-Def tv) I'm interested in this. Try removing any special mode's from your xorg.conf. It's possible that the refresh rate or something on those lines is to high for the display or possibly start with the visa driver and work your way forward. Because you get the boot splash screen it's probably not the card just the configuration.

I had some further thought on this.
You might have to define another monitor for the TV. Clone clones the output of the first monitor which might not be suitable for the TV. Does that seem reasonable?

Good luck.

I haven't thought about that..though it does sound reasonable, I get home tonight I'll test it out in the morning, though I have a feeling this is going to be a bit of "trial and error" so I will post back whenever I see success.

Hi -

Sorry - but ATI Linux support has long been - and unfortunately remains - a sad and pathetic joke compared to NVidia.

If you want decent graphics support, trash your ATI card and get an NVidia. If the ATI is on-board and you have a spare PCI-E slot, then DISABLE the ATI in the BIOS ... and get an NVidia card.

Here are are more details:

Yes I know this but the problem is I have an hp (well actually compaq but the same thing) laptop and they only put ATI cards in their laptops now wish they would go back to NVidia, I hear how things are so much more simple with that card
