I highlight shadow_7 post - in my opinion dpms is the key, but IN ADDITION you have to check as well the power settings of your own desktop software (doesn't matter what you're using as sw and setting as general config in X, if the desktop thinks it has to go to sleep then it will).

On my side I have only this in my xorg.conf...
Code:
Option "DPMS" "off"
...which mirrors shadow_7 post recommendation and additionally I have this in my start scripts of X:
Code:
xset s noblank
xset s off
xset -dpms
With these settings my monitor is ok as long as I start X quickly enough after the initial boot (if I don't and wait for e.g. 5 minutes then for some reason things get screwed up) - I have now my server running since 3 weeks with the monitor off for most of the time and graphics are always ok on my monitor.

Cheers

Thanks for your inputs too Pearlseattle. I will check those settings out too and seeing where you actually have them will be helpful to a newbie like me. I know we are finally in the right ballpark with these settings because I kind of finally fixed this issue. Rather than doing my other thing after I left, I decided to read a little more about xrandr. I could see the setting in my terminal was calling for a 30 HZ connection, but I was using a 60 HZ HDMI connection on my TV. I unplugged the HDMI cable from the TV and moved it to a 30 HZ plug and there was my screen, just the way I left it without hitting any buttons at all. I knew that was like turning it off, but tested that too and again, the screen is back without hitting any buttons.

The only reason I'm not completely done with this is that I can see the screen is a bit jerky now. I know it will be fairly simple to change everything to 60 HZ and I know all my hardware will support it, just need to read about how to do it. I really appreciate all the inputs and help in me finally figuring this out. I learned many things while fiddling with this, which is a big part of why I'm trying to set this up in the first place. I had no clue there were different HDMI inputs either, I thought those were all the same.

Now I really need to get some other things done. Can't wait to come back and mess with this some more and get it finished.
