hde/hda problems

I have a situation where, during installation, my one and only hard drive (connected to the motherboard's interface) shows up as being /dev/hde (instead of /dev/hda). Everything works fine as long as I don't try to use a customized kernel.

If I do try booting from a customized kernel, the hard disk is recognized as being /dev/hda. This causes massive confusion in the distribution and kernel, and results in a kernel panic.

I am looking for any advice or help in getting this situation straightened out.

Thanks.

Presumably this is a SATA drive you're running ? If so, when you recompile the kernel are you ensureing that you select the correct bits for your drive ?

Cheers,

Actually, the drive is UDMA, and to the best of my knowledge, everything has been set up correctly in the kernel configuration.
