HDD with bad clusters...

I have a 20 GB seagate HDD. I was having problems installing windows 98 and 2000 server on it. Tried formatting the same several times, but of no use. When I installed FC2 on the same HDD, it got installed without a problem.

Though I later on confirmed that there are bad sectors on the HDD, how did FC work on the same?

Hi,

FC2 probably checked/formatted the HD and marked the badblocks (will not be used).
This is done by mke2fs and the -c option (among other options).

BTW: This is only done once, so if you have a bad hd you need to be carefull. Take a look at man mke2fs and man badblocks

Hope this clears things up a bit.
