I/O errors on disks usually mean there is a physical problem. Is the drive clicking or ticking?
Also, if you're tinkering with your system and just added this other drive you speak of, make sure its mounted properly and not dangling or laid crooked... that can cause the drive to spin up and down, and well when that happens other strange things happen.
