hdb: lost inturrupt

AMD K6/2 450 132MB Ram 2 RTL 2039 NIC S3 PCI Grafics 40GB Seagate HDD
CentOD 4.2 Server Install

Why do I continue to get this message "hdb: Lost Interrupt" and the machine hangs. In grafic mode I can hover over buttons and they chage onhover but no operations started ie. Firefox ever complete running. when I click on some other button the machine totally freezes animation included. In text mode I cant enter text and this mesage continues to appear.
I read something on the following "hdb=nodma" or "ide=nodma" to be passed at boot time and edited my grub.conf to include this but to noavail. I am still fairly new at Linux so any help is appreciated.

Hi there, I'm no linux guru or anything, but I have been having the same problem as you.

Thats error message usually ended up locking up my computer and after a while they forced me to hard reboot the comp.

Anyway after losing one drive (I think its dead, but I still have to test it with me current solution) I scoured google and here and I came across a post suggesting its a BIOS/ ACPI problem and that I turn it off. Well since I was using knoppix at the time (couldn't install anything - drive wouldnt sustain any reading/writing) and I booted it with "acpi=pci" and it works now. I really dont know why but it does.
