I need a new disk that will be used in a full time server.
I've found some very interesting comparisons in the category in which i'm interested (which is ide 40gb).
The competitors are:
Seagate Barracuda ATA IV
Western Digital 1200 BB
Maxtor Diamond MaxPlus D740X
IBM Deskstar 120GXP
Most of these tests give the IBM as the best overall (though al of them have great results) and some other the WD.
Now that would be great, but this is what worries me:
Tough choice, but our recommendation is the WD1200BB for desktop usage and the 120GXP for servers.
(Addendum 3/5/2002: Readers called to attention IBM's recommendation of just 333 power-on hours per month in the drive's spec sheet. Since server drives usually must run 24 hours a day, Maxtor's DiamondMax Plus D740X remains ATA's best server disk. For more information, check out this headline.)
This addendum (taken from the IBM review at storagereview.com) implies that IBM itself recommends no more than 11 power-on hours per day for its disk.
Should this be taken seriously???
Is anyone here fully using this disk without any problems??
Is any of these disks known to be specially outstanding in Linux?
Any comment greatly appreciated...
(sorry for the post not being exactly a linux related issue..)
Mux.
