Having trouble increasing resolution

I'm currently using RedHat 9.0 on a toshiba laptop.
The resolution on this monitor should go up to 1024x768, but it's stuck at 800x600. Every time I try to up the res in the display, I get this notice:

Display settings changed

You need to log out and restart the X server for the changes to take effect.
Configuration was written to /etc/X11/xf86Config, original
configuration saved as /etc/X11/XF86Config.backup.

I'm not sure how to restart X server, whatever that is, so I just restarted the whole PC, but that didn't seem to do anything. The resolution stays the same.

If anyone has any ideas, that'd be great.

Adin: You should be able to restart X with ctrl+alt+backspace (though I almost never used redhat it works on everything else), then when you get a prompt type 'startx'

As far as your actual config, restarting the whole system should make the changes take effect. Could you post the relevant monitor/res section from your /etc/X11/XF86Config so we can have a look?

What would you like the res to be? Since you are using a default color depth of 24bit, this is the important part of your config:
Code:
 Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
If you would like say, 1024x768 simply change it to:
Code:
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
X will always try to use the first Mode, then if it can't it will try the next and so on.

tried what you said...

well, I threw in the 1024x768 as you said, but it keeps loading 800x600 instead. The only difference it made was when I went to change the resolution the GUI way, 1024x768 was already set in, whereas before, 800x600 would be set. The image displayed would be that of my desktop surrounded by a sort of dotted line a small amount larger. And no, no change was made to my actual resolution.

I'm newish to linux, a former MS user, and i was running windows at 1024x768 (it's a fairly new laptop...) so I know this machine is capable of it. Maybe linux is having trouble recognizing my graphics driver?

http://cold.sunsite.dk/toshiba/

this randomly came up in a search engine, it has a section about preparing the video card for linux use. Does it look safe, and do you think it will fix the prob?
