Having problems with Network card

Hey, I'm a complete novice with Linux. Love the sound of all the stuff going on so went for the dual boot with Win xp.

Installed Mandrake 9.2.

wanting to connect to the INTERNET through a broadband router, but when it gets to install eth0 at start up it says fail!

No connection is possible. The network card is an on-board Via-Rhine. How can I resolve this?

what mainboard do you have? with latest mainboard it's possible toi solve similar problem if you disable in your BIOS Plug and PLay option.
try to write as root

#ifconfig eth0 and tell as what you read.

In bios it is already pnp disabled.
