Having a hard time with soundcard.

Hi, I was using knoppix HDD install and my sound card worked fine after using alsaconf to configure it as a legacy card. I made a switch to Kanopix HDD install and now alsaconf isn't working for me in this distro. It errors out and says this:

/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1163: No soundcards found...

I was trying to unload that asla module or whatever ant it kept giving me sound error on boot-up. In my pursuit I managed to delete alsaconf altogether (doh). So, I'm wondering how I can try to get the alsaconf file reloaded and how to unload the alsa sound configuration that messed up after the first time I ran alsaconf-ran the wrong setup options. Thanks for any/all help.

Edit:

I'm trying a re-install now. I don't know what the deal is with alsactl but it seems to be messing up my sound card. I never rememeber using that for my soundcard before. Apparently once you mess up running alsaconf in kanotix 2006 it sticks and I don't know how to back-out. So, a reload is in order.

I'm not familiar with that distro but rebooting or re0installing rarely fixes anything. It is just a config file somewhere that needs to be changed. Trick is finding it.

Linux is not windoze.

Oh, BUMP!!

Look in /usr/share/alsa. You may have a generic alsa.conf that you can copy to /etc and put to work. Run alsaconf after the copy and you may be able to configure again.

After beating my head against the wall trying to get my sound card to work in Kanotix I gave up. Back on Knoppix because it just "works" with my hardware setup. Takes forever and a day to boot up after installing to the HDD but still worth it since it rocks!
