Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Has anyone managed to get a Webcam (or PC CAMERA) working in Slackware 13.0?

I found a lot of out-of-date suggestions for using no longer supported software on the web.

Slackware does acknowledge the cheep webcam. *lsusb* and a *cat /proc/sys/bus/usb/devices* both show it plugged in. The help I did find on the web says to use the *uvcvideo* kernel module and it loads without complaint. And that is where I come to a stop.

*uvcvideo* creates a pagelong location for its /dev... attachment point and I have no idea what software can make its images visible on the screen.

YES - I connected the hardware to my wife's Window'$ machine and it works fine.

What am I missing, what do I need to do?

I have been using Linux since 1992 and Slackware since it came out. My endeavors with Linux have been in the area of production of products via Applied Math solutions. I'm retired and want to try webcam stuff.

Hi,

Try guvcview SlackBuild for 13.0;
Quote:
guvcview (GTK+ UVC Viewer)

This project aims at providing a simple GTK interface for capturing
and viewing video from devices supported by the linux UVC driver,
although it should also work with any v4l2 compatible device.

This requires twolame, portaudio, and ffmpeg.
If your device modules/drivers are loaded then this will provide the means to view.
