Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Angry Has anybody got problems using an Intel SRCS14L SATA controler (gdth)?

I'm trying to install Debian, which I have loaded on 2 other machines here. Using the latest stable 3.1. I ran into issues when it was creating the partition with the debian installer, it would get about 30% of the way done and then just lock. The LED's would stop lighting up and it would just hang there.

I switched over to Arch Linux, which I been meaning to use for a while now. I was able to create the partition fine and got it all installed. The drive was fine when unrarring the kernel and did a kernel rebuild.

I really have no idea what compnants to build into the kernel for support on this thing, so I built in the Sil311x and the gdth driver on a 2.6.8 kernel.

Of course the kernel wasn't proper and caused the system to reboot durring boot up. No biggy, I'll look into it. Rebooting into the default kernel requires a fschk since I pissed it off. (I made the partition an ext2 instead of ext3, meaning to add the journal later)

Well, I can't get further than maybe 3% into the fschk before the LED's stop and system hangs.

So my question is 2 fold,

First... Is the gdth just this flakey?
Second... What do I build into the kernel to get proper support for this thing? In the past I have used AHA 29160's and I20 controlers, so I am new to using libata, which is what I am using now for support on the card I am using now.

Ok, but can someone explain to me how to patch in libata?

Just type 'patch -p0 < 2.6.9-rc2-bk1-libata1.patch' from /usr/src

Also what considerations to I use when I build the kernel? I read something about making sure not to build in ATA support
