Hardware RAID PCI Card (Hardware?)

Ok, well I've got me a RAID card. And have no idea what to do now ;)

I plugged it into the PCI slot, ran an IDE cable from the card to the drive, and powered it up as well. Now, I am guessing I need a kernel recompile at this point to get it working, but I was just wondering what I need, or what I should look for while doing the compile. Is it better to go built in or module for that? What is an easy way to find out what my device is after the compile is completed? Is there anything special I should look at (like raid-start or something like that) to make it start working, or will it be like the other ide controllers and once they are brought up by the kernel, it is good to go?

Thank you for any suggestions :) Here's the model if it helps:

PCI0649
CMD Technology Inc

Also, I'm running Slackware 8.1 and getting ready to build the 2.4.20lq kernel for it. I am currently in Mandrake 9.0 and it's not recognized in here either; however I really don't care about that right now, I'd much rather get it setup in Slack first then dork around with my other distros/OS's later.

Cool

Woot Woot! :D

Cool, so I built me a new kernel:
Code:

bash-2.05a$ uname -r
2.4.20-lq1

And had a few snags. Wasn't sure whether it was because I was trying to probe both raid-linear and raid-0 or maybe because I didn't have the chipset built into the kernel (most likely). So I went back, made a few changes to the kernel config, edited my /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and brought the system back up. Now everything is running just fine! :D

FYI, I access my devices via /dev/hdgx (depending on the partition) I thought it would be /dev/md0 but I guess that's for RAID-1 or something.

All I can say is I am totally stoked!

Cool
