Hardware Raid on VIA VT6421 PCI Card not recognized

Dear community,

in germany we have a proverb that says 'i've finished with my latin' - means something like I've tried everything and have no further idea.

I have a mid-aged computer that should no act as a server (development). I installed a S-ATA Hardware RAID Controller with a VIA VT6421A chipset.
sata_via is loaded after the setup/live cd is started, so it is sure that all disks as well as the controller work. The raid 1 is successfully created, as a windows 7 setup routine finds the correct raid array.

No matter which distro I use (ubuntu, opensuse, knoppix live cd), all systems only see both disks (/dev/sda+b) as a single and not as a raid.

I guess I am missing something to enable raid, but rellay have no clue how to do that. Normally, I am used to have no problems with the raid config (for instance on an Asus P5Q mainboard).

Maybe someone could help me to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Yanni

That chip is still a basic storage controller and it is not a true hardware RAID. I suggest disable software or fake RAID for the controller and use Linux software RAID instead. If data is already on the RAID array, you have to use the utility dmraid to use the RAID array in Linux.

Another saying is the code H2IK which means "Hell that I know." The saying "I've finished with my Latin" is not a proverb. It is a figure of speech.

1TB SATA Drive Samsung not recognized

Hi,

if I understand well, you've managed to recognize drive attached to 6421 controller?

I'm even step back from you.

I've bougth PCI -> IDE+SATA card, but I can't use SATA disk with it.

I use Intel Little Valley (D201GLY) MB, VIA VT6421 PCI card and Samsung HD103SI (SAMSUNG F2 1TB SATAII/300 32MB 5400 ECO Green).

When I boot Fedora 10, only sata_pci module is loaded.
But I can't see any /dev/sd* entry for Samsung drive. Neither /dev/disk/by-id.

I tried openSuse install but it can't se the drive too.

I even tried to change jumpers on the drive to 150Mb, but without success.

The drive works, because I can use it via USB->SATA converter without problem.

Can you help me what to do to see the drive?

Thanks,
Jan

Hello, I'm in the same situation since ubuntu karmic can recognize the pci controller VT6421 with the driver "sata_via", but not the hard disk of 160 gb attached. Any help will be appreciated.
