Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Hardware Raid 1 Question

I am using an ABIT VT7 mobo with 2 200gb Seagate SATA hd's running in Raid 1. Ive configured the two devices using the onboard raid controller.

Now i have installed my distroy of linux (slackware) onto /dev/hda because under my first impression any data written to that hd would be automatically copied to /dev/hdb, this seems to not be the case. I know that under windows it would only see 1 hd, should that also be that way in linux with a hardware raid setup, like I would install it to /dev/rda(just a guess of the device) for the raid controller linking the two hd's?

I am thinking the later option is the correct one.

thanks

I don't know much about RAID, however if it's NVRAID (NForce chipset) that you use, that won't work just out of the box.

but am I right about linux having to see the two hd's as a single raid device like /dev/rda(made this up) for it to use a hardware raid? If so then that will defiantely send me in the right direction

Because right now the raid controller bios program is showing them both in raid 1 but linux sees them as tottaly seperate and independent drives.

NVRAID is not hardware RAID. It is still software RAID. Linux does not use the BIOS to handle the hard drives. You have to use dmraid to make Linux behave like DOS/Windows.
