Hardware project from scratch (E-book reader). A few, very basic, questions
 

Hello there :)

I wanted to start a project in building an e-book reader and I had a few questions on where to start. It's my first attempt at building something of articulate.

Whilst the software programming isn't an issue, my experience in harware programming is limited to playing around with arduinos to do really basic stuff (LEDs and stuff). So I'm pretty much starting from zero.

My idea was to build a basic e-book reader with an e-ink screen which could display PDFs (I don't really need other formats), or, in worst of cases, plain text files
Nothing too fancy

I have a few questions:
a) WHERE TO START?
it might sound stupid, but I was hoping somebody could give some useful advice on what hardware is needed and best to use (apart from a screen, obviusoly. Are there any readymade boards out there?)
b) What software to use?
Is LinuxFromScratch a good choice or would you recommend something different?
c) Any good links to resources/documentation that would help me during this process?
Probably the best place to start anyway :)

Using an Arduino or something similar isn't really what I wanted, since I would like to learn the basics of harware programming and how things work on a deeper level. And was, in general, looking for a more "from scratch" approach

I realize I've got a very vague idea, so answering my questions isn't really easy, but I'm willing to learn and have time to spend on the project and lots of space for trial and error

answering:

a) create /vps/.cde folder inside your home folder.
b) any IDE with Java compliance should do the trick,
c) if you install appropriate IDE documentation should be there in /docs folder (or similar),

Be aware that you have to untack /var/config entry.

I think I'm not really understanding what you mean or, viceversa, you didn't really understand what I meant

a) What has CDE got to do with this?
b) I never used java extensively but I don't think it's your best choice when it comes to low level programming
c) Where does the ide's documentation come in handy when you have to build a linux distro?
