Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Hardware MPEG Encoder

I am looking to buy a TV tuner that has MPEG hardware encoding capability. Someone recommended a WinTV/PVR, but I could not find anything about MPEG encoding in the documentation or the source. Does this card do hardware encoding? If not, what does?

The PVR350 does hardware MPEG encoding and it is well supported in Linux - at least from what I have heard (I have no first hand experience of it). The PVR250 is virtually the same card but doesn't do hardware encoding and it lacks the video out of the 350.

...and you may also want to look at this page from the MythTV project about getting the 350 up and going.

The PVR-250 does hardware encoding but does not do hardware decoding for output on TV. Usually people just use the TV output on their video cards. Why spend more if you are not going to use all the features of the PVR-350.

Go to http://www.hauppauge.com/Pages/compare_pvr.html if you want to compare PVR-350 to PVR-250.
