Red Hat does have a hardware compatibility list on their site and I have the feeling Mandrake does too. Have you tried them?

Most hardware (I would go as far as to say 99%) is Linux compatible. It is only the shitty WIN-hardware (modems come to mind, although I am sure that there are others) that don't work.

So if you buy quality, branded hardware you'll be just fine.

for ultimate hardware compatibility, i cant stop peddling RH 9, its evolved ages to the point beyond M$ as far as hardware detection and configuration (and drivers) go

The best hardware support has SuSE at http://hardwaredb.suse.de/index.php?LANG=en_UK.
If you are new to Linux use SuSE which is the easiest distro to install and has more hardware support that any other distro even Red Hat ( ex. Promise raid controllers etc.)
