hardware configuration

Hello folks,

i'm currently learning kernel configuration.
running make menuconfig,i see parameter that obviously do not apply to
my environment and i think and hope, also in the future never apply.

looking at the dmesg i find messages about APIC disabled by bios and renabled by linux.
so i disable local apic in the kernel configuration...

now the question....

is there a tool that automatically sense the hardware installed on the machine, and generates an output campatible with menuconfig of .config file?

or commands useful to determine the characteristics asked by menuconfig ?

thanks in advance to anyone
