Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Hardware change inquiry

Hi-
just a general question.. I'm running Suse 9.1 Professioanl. If i wanted to change some hardware, are there any pitfalls or things i need to do in preparation? I was told that before i change to an LCD monitor from a CRT that i need to go into Sax and chagne it to LCD BEFORE i actually connect it, whcih isnt any trouble... What about upgrading a processor or memory? Other peripherals, Suse will detect and adjust on reboot, but i am concerned about mission critical components like RAM and CPU..

thanks,
-myk

RAM and CPU are the components that are least likely to have compatability problems when you upgrade. Changing the RAM will be painless, and changing the CPU will only be a problem if you change processor architecture - which means changing motherboard, and it doesn't sound like you're doing that. You may have to adjust some jumper settings on your motherboard, or through the BIOS if your motherboard is less than 3-4 years old. But SUSE won't mind the change!
