Hardware Browser Crashes

i am running redhat 9, and the hardware browser is crashing. upon loading the window comes up and is not responsive and no devices show up, the only alternative is to kill the app, also when booting everything shows ok except one error "updateing etc/fstab cannot stat dev/cdrom no such file or directory" or something along those lines. i have a sony 52x cdrw and pioneer dvdrw. i have re loaded linux core once and something must have not installed correctly because before this was not a prob, i need to know which file i can modify to change cdrom drivers without the use of the hardware browser, or a way to "search for new hardware" like windows xp. it may be that i am missing a driver file. i read that the hardware browser problem may be because of a firewire card, well i dont have one but my sound blaster audigy has a firewire port, if this is the case is there a way to disable the firewire port, i dual boot and windows is the only os that i will need to access a firewire device, for that matter i would like my usb device to be disabled aswell as i have a printer that i am unable to find a linux driver for (HP PSC 1200) that i have to give a generic text driver to just to shut up the checking for new hardware process on boot

Problem fixed with cdrom drives, i dont know why it worked but here goes, first edited fstab and changed cdrom and cdrom1 to hdc and hdd, worked 1st boot fine but the updater would always change them back. left them alone, went into the grub lst file and had a line with hdc=ide-scsi and hdd=ide-scsi changed hdc and hdd here to cdrom and cdrom1, no more error on boot, and the cdrom drives both work, on boot they show up as hdc hdd but that line somehow makes the cdrom and cdrom1 devices present so they are there to be mounted with fstab and it all works every reboot. i may have fixed it an ass backwards way so if anybody else has ideas lemme know. still hardware browser crashes and i dunno where to start on that one
