Hard locks on suse

i am getting hard lock ups of the os periodicly where, without warning, everything freezes. I am unable to track down to source - hardware or software. Everything looks normal and works fine until it locks up.

running amd x64 3500+ and suse 9.2 pro 64. i have a MSI MS-7025 K8N Neo2 Platinum MoBo with nforce3 chipset video is gforce 5200. It has both sata and ata on the mobo, but i am running all ata. i have 3 250gb hds connected to the computer. 2 are connect to the primary controler, and controller 1 and a sii ide pci card with another 250 gb.

suse appeared to detect everything correctly, but i havent ruled out the os yet.

hda = WDC WD2500JB-00GVA0 250GB ata 100
hdb = WDC WD2500JB-00FUA0 250GB ata 100
hdc = DL DVD Burner
hde = Maxtor 6Y250P0 ata 133

this is lsmod output:

Also running hdparm -t /dev/hdx give widly varing results. could this be a problem?

/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 8 MB in 3.31 seconds = 2.42 MB/sec
earth:/home/gil # hdparm -t /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 68 MB in 3.01 seconds = 22.62 MB/sec
earth:/home/gil # hdparm -t /dev/hde

/dev/hde:
Timing buffered disk reads: 172 MB in 3.01 seconds = 57.06 MB/sec

any help is apreciated!

thx

You could check out the sii ide pci card by removing it. If possible reconfigure your hard drives to run without the pci card and try running without it (remove it completely from the machine). Incompatibility between the motherboard BIOS and the secondary controller BIOS is a fairly common problem and it is a fairly easy thing to check out.

what i find most anoying besides the lock ups is that i can not find anything in the logs to point me in the direction of the problem.

Intermittent lockups often spell a hardware problem.

Presuming this was a stable system that suddenly became unstable, I would be looking at the power supply and the motherboard.
