hard drives aren't recognized until reboot

I have a computer with 2 internal hard drives and one of them doesn't show up in the bios until I reboot. Almost every time. Does this mean the drive is going to fail or the cable is bad or what?

If you mean the initial power-up is not finding the drive, then you'll need to go into your BIOS and increase the timeout. That drive may simply require more time to spin-up (common with the "green" drives).

Well they used to be recognized without rebooting. This started maybe a month ago. Also the boot up is very slow so...

Hi,

Do you see anything in the logs (/var/log) or 'dmesg' ? Which Gnu/Linux?

FYI: I suggest that you look at 'How to Ask Questions the Smart Way' so in the future your queries provide information that will aid us in diagnosis of the problem or query.

;-)

This is just a hardware problem. It could be the spin-up thing, but like I said, its weird that it used to work. I'm just wondering what would cause this.
