Hard drive not recognized
Hi,
I have this really odd problem. I installed a new 160Gb Western Digital hard drive. I have installed it and all the cables are correctly installed and the jumper settings are correct. The drive is the Secondary Master, and I have a DVD burner as the secondary slave. When I switch on the computer, only the two hard drives on the primary are recognised. They do not even show up in the bios. If I then reboot, the hard drive and dvd on the secondary are recognised and work correctly. Any ideas what is causing this, and what I can do to fix it? The relevant lines of my fstab are shown below (I don't know if this will help or not:) ): Code:
/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 --Ian |
Sounds like a hardware problem with the second controller not being reset properly on power up. I have the same problem on one of my computers with a SCSI controller. I am also forced to reboot whenever I first power on the PC.
Assuming the BIOS and everything is configured correctly I do not think there is anything you can do besides getting a another IDE controller or replacing the motherboard. The problem might be due to a faulty drive or DVD. You could disconnect one and a time to see if it fixes the problem. |
