hard drive led never goes off

i installed suse 10.1 recently and i think its ok but there is an annoyig problem. it is to noisy and my hard drive led NEVER goes off. it is really irritating. i thought it might be file indexing for the desktop search but i dont know anymore. is everythings safe or is my hardware being damaged

Maybe your swap is being used? Type:

free -m

And see the output.

i think i was a bit premature on that one the led has stopped and the computer is very quite now. maybe it was some starup daemon

it was most likely slocate building it's database...I think Suse does this for you on the first boot.
