Hard Drive Failure?

Last night while playing a game I noticed that I could hear my hard drive. Is it just a annoyance or is it time to start that back-up I've neglected to do? Thanks.

is it a constant even sounding hum or does it change in pitch?

if its an even sounding hum then i wouldent worry too much, but if it changes in pitch frequenly then i would plan on buying a new hard drive, if all your hearing is the heads reading the data then i wouldent worry.

you should be backing things up anyway so i would deffinantly reccomend doing that.

It frequently changes volume. At louder volumes it sounds like a scrathing noise and at lower I don't know what it sounds like. So I take it is starting to die?

If a hard drive is making a racket then most likely the bearings are starting to go, and your drive is liable to fail pretty soon. My recommendation would be to immediately back up any important data on that drive, and replace it with a new one. Audible scratching noises are just not a good sign at all, so I woud not trust that drive any longer. -- J.W.
