Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

hard drive failure

Hi all,

I was compiling a new kernel and after it finished my computer became really slow (ls command would take 5 sec). So I rebooted my computer, but it won't boot anymore, I get IO error while booting.

So I booted the Suse live CD and was able to mount the hard drive and backup my data.

Went I tried to do a fsck, I get a lot of these:

Quote:
Error reading block ##### (Attempt to read block from filesystem resuled in short read) while doing inode scan.
What does this mean, my hard drive has gone bad or just the filesystem?

I know a lot more about hardware than I do about linux, but from what I know the filesystem stuff is all in the kernel, which would logically lead me to believe that the timing is too coincidental for it to be a hardware problem. Hard drives do fail, but not very often after their first 24 hours of use. I'd be suspicous of that new kernel...

Hi guys,

Thanks for the inputs. The hard drive was bad, it couldn't pass the diagnostic test, I had to call Dell to replace it.

Had to reinstall everything, but good thing I was able to backup. Though this is a bad experience, good support from Dell. They shipped the hard drive the same day I called, I received it the next day (before I had to leave on vacation).
