hard drive errors

Do these errors mean that the hard drive is on its last legs?

The hard drive is making strange noises and general performance is poor.

Code:

That's usually a bad sign. However, to verify, try:

smartctl -iAH /dev/hda

You can include that report as documentation for a warranty return as well.

If you have any data on it that you need, get if off of it now! I had an old IBM drive that failed recently with much the same errors. I think it died due to heat failure from proximity to a Maxtor, as it was an intermittent that got worse. But, it could have just been because it was 5 years old. But, really, don't wait about taking it out of your system.

I guess its time to back up my data then :0)

This test seemed to pass ok but errors are being detected at startup
more often than not now and I'm having tp launch e2fsck to get booted up.

If I'm reading this right, this can't be good. Did you recently add another drive close right under this one, or is it in a tight spot?

Edit:
Oops. Never mind, I can't be reading that right. There's no way it's 157 degrees C. Probably it's 35C which is nothing.

slzckboy 04-29-2007 02:00 PM

hmm...

thats a tad hot.

its a dell latitude l400 pentium 3 laptop.
they are quite small and compact.
It's an old(second hand) machine ...........

macemoneta 04-29-2007 02:01 PM

These are the significant errors:

Code:

  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate    0x000b  085  085  062    Pre-fail  Always      -      9306175
191 G-Sense_Error_Rate      0x000a  100  100  000    Old_age  Always      -      65536
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032  100  100  000    Old_age  Always      -      99
196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032  100  100  000    Old_age  Always      -      45
197 Current_Pending_Sector  0x0022  100  100  000    Old_age  Always      -      44

It appears that you have been less than gentle with the drive while it is spinning (G-Sense_Error_Rate). Get your data off as Quakeboy02 recommended and replace the drive.

slzckboy 04-29-2007 02:02 PM

this is the temp of my main computer that has been on for about 12
hours now..
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 042 055 000 Old_age Always - 42

the other laptop in question was only on for 3 mins b4 i shut it off.

macemoneta 04-29-2007 02:20 PM

For temperature, 35 is not a problem, but the worst case value (62C, 143F) is above the 55C operating max for this drive.

Either this indicates improper cooling, or the drive is starting to run dry (bearing temperature rising). That the current temp is acceptable indicates that at some point the unit was not getting cooled properly and may have overheated the drive (for example, vent covered).
