Try it and see...

Depends on the OS, depends on the hardware.
What are you doing this for?

To upgrade OS from FC3 to FC7

The machine whose OS i have to upgrade is a server machine running samba, firewall, httpd, pserver, etc. . So the downtime has to be less.
For that purpose i'm installing OS on a new HDD while inserting it into another machine and after installation and whole configuration putting it on the original machine.

THe two machines in scene are having different HW configs.

I see... standard way to upgrade a server is to add a second one in a failover configuration, then you take the main server offline to service. The failover server takes up the load while the main one is being serviced. Downtime = zero.
