Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Hard Disk Geometry Problem

I have recently come across a strange problem with Windows XP. I have two hard drives on my PC (60GB and 80GB) and run dual systems (Linux and Windows). Recently I wanted to create new partitions but whenever I open Power Quest it gives me the following error.

“ Disk1 58602345 has a different geometry unknown to this application or to the system in use. This serious problem could cause data loss. We recommend you to back up all the data and format the complete disk. “

However this wasn’t the case until recently as I could use PQ without any problems. I haven’t done any partitioning lately. Therefore I can’t imagine how the system could have a different geometry.

I have also tried to access my hda from hdb with Suse Linux but it also says "unknown partition".

Can anyone suggest me how to solve this problem without formatting the hard drive.(otherwise I will have to install all the software once more. I it is not possible to solve this without formatting the HD, what is the best way to perform that with minimum

Thank you in advance

That sounds like there is a problem with the partition table. I've never heard of anyone rescuing the entire drive and not having to reformat the whole drive.

If you have important data on the drive, it is probably still there, and someone who does data recovery may be able to get it, depending on how bad the partition table is, and if you know exactly what the partition layout was before. I was able to recover all of the data on one of my partitions when the partition table was damaged. I used a little program that is for formatting and partitioning and I rewrote the partition table. The FAT32 data was lost because I didnt get the partition size right, but the ext2 partition was recovered.
