halt/poweroff quirks

upon a new linux install, halt/poweroff doesnt function properly. it does not cut the power, it just halts after "Power Down" message (after unmounting, so it's safe to switch off). however i want it to do that automatically. My guess is that it's a kernel option.

so what do i have to enable to get this feature?

boot up again and try 'modprobe apm'
If that doesn't barf out any errors at you then try 'apmd'

If the above goes well then edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and make sure the line '/sbin/modprobe apm' is uncommented (delete the '#' at the beginning of the line)

When you issue the halt command your machine should power off. Upon the next reboot it should load the apm module and if rc.M sees that the module was indeed loaded will start up apmd.

If you want to use acpi then you will need to be sure that it is enebled in your BIOS and that your kernel was built to support ACPI.
